Definitely a game for kids...., 16 May 2010

I purchased it because of all the great reviews about it as a fun local coop game to play with friends and guests. However, everything about this game seems to be geared for kids: The music, the characters, the narration, all of it. The graphics look cool at first, but game play is repetitive and very juvenile, such as putting stickers on dolls to open a gate or something. This is all fine and dandy if you're a kid or playing with kids, but I got the sense from all the rave reviews that this game would be as much fun for adults. Not the case at all.

    Love it!, 3 May 2010

For someone who hasn't played video games for, hm, a decade at least, this game is fun! My husband is into the 'shooting' games which I find scary. We both love this game! I haven't tried any of the online stuff yet due to lack of time but it should be fun too, when I get around to it.

Great for creative little minds, 15 Apr 2010

I bought this game for my 5 year old son, just looking for SOMETHING appropriate for him. It is the best game I have ever bought for him. My son loves to draw, color, cut up paper, and make things out of paper. This video game extends his creativity so he can do the same things in video game format. He absolutely loves it. I am amazed at how well he can control the features and options to create a whole new world. He also gets a sense of shape and perspective. He has to figure out why his creation fell over instead of standing like he wanted it to. He has to figure out how to put the parts together so it does what he wants. (I.E. he has to set the "brain" controls on an animal he created so it will follow his character the way he wants it to, or set a bomb in the right place so it will cause things to blow up and fall like he envisions.) He sits and giggles like crazy over some of the noises the game makes, or at things he can do to his creations, such as blow them up, set them on fire, or have them crackle with lightening. His 8 year old brother used to say it was a baby game, but now he is addicted to it too. It is wonderful to watch them play it together, sometimes cooperating, and sometimes competing. I would highly recommend this game to anyone of any age who wants to be creative in a whole new way.

    LittleBigProblems., 23 Mar 2010

I wanted to like this game. It was sold out everywhere for the longest time, to the point where I was almost buying into the hype that this was -the- title to have for the ps3. The demo was really cool, but I could only play that over and over so many times. When I finally got the game, everything rocked. I was having fun, enjoyed dressing up Sackboy in the vast variety of costumes, and getting to play with other people online in story and user-created levels was a smooth experience.

All of that fun lasted about 2 hours.

The tagline for LittleBigPlanet is 'Fun shall overcome', and I was hoping that it'd live up to that phrase. It certainly has all the production values in it to be a great game, and you can tell the developers put tons of time and effort into everything. I really can't say I've played any other game with this much attention to level design and trying to make things different with gameplay. Unfortunately, they didn't seem to put enough time into control. And I know a lot of other people are in the same boat as me, but tend to overlook that and just go on about the positives without bringing up the key negatives.

The story's simple, though there really isn't one. You control Sackboy, playing through LittleBigPlanet, a land where everyone's imagination collects and runs wild. You guide him through various levels, usually with the key being to make it from the beginng to end, though some levels have different tasks and objectives. One level might have you reunite a baby animal with its mother, while another has you driving around to get a new, better car. Gameplay is mostly platforming with a few new twists. There are three different layers you can run on (background, foreground and middleground), so if something's in your way on one layer, you can just jump to a different one and bypass it. There are prize and point bubbles found in each level that up your score or give you new stickers and objects you can use to decorate the levels with, and new costumes as well.

Again, this game has everything that I'd love to play. But the big problems for me, were the controls for Sackboy. First, I feel this should've used the d-pad and not the analog stick. Since it plays like a 2D platformer, using the analog stick felt weird to me. Instead, the d-pad is used to change Sackboy's facial expressions. It's a cute addition but they didn't have to do that- it could've been assigned to another option on the menu. Sackboy really got on my nerves though, when it came to jumping. When you jump, Sackboy suddenly turns floaty, and you control yourself in the air before you come down. It feels like you're in space half the time. I never felt like I was getting better at playing the game because of how the physics work. It didn't help that you only have 4 'lives' per section in a level (there are mini-checkpoints scattered through each stage) and once you lose them all, you have to start over from the beginning. There also isn't much to the levels themselves. While I said the objectives have some variety, progressing through levels usually comes down to 'drag this to this spot' and 'hold onto this and swing over here'. Something I also would've liked was for you to be able to change how Sackboy plays. You can already dress him up how you want, why not make the different outfits or their pieces make him do different things? Being able to jump higher would've been a huge help. I know they were probably trying to make the gameplay as simple as possible, like an old school platformer, but old school platformers had precise jumping for the most part.

What the game really comes down to is the level creation. You can create damn near anything you want to. Whenever I go online, there's always a dozen or so levels that floor me. One I've seen was based on South Park, and had all the main characters as people you can talk to in order to find out what to do next, and they looked -just- like their animated counterparts. If you're the kind of person who likes customization features in games, LittleBigPlanet is for you. You can spend hours upon hours just creating 1/4 of a level. And get this- there's a steady flow of new objects that you can buy online. The most recent one was based on Pirates of the Caribbean.

Visually, LittleBigPlanet looks very good. It doesn't push the ps3 to its limits by any means, but a lot of the levels are just plain beautiful, and I love the art direction. The calavera/Dia de los Muertos wedding levels really stood out the most and I applaud those who worked on them. There wasn't any slowdown I experienced while playing the main game, but it happens sometimes while playing online due to loading and other players popping in and out. The music for the game is equally good with as much variety as the Jet Set Radio games. Some levels have peaceful, happy music while others have rockin' tracks or Latin dance. Sadly, my copy was the censored version, where one level (Swingin' Safari) has just the music and all the lyrics removed from the song (Tapha Niang by Toumani Diabaté) because two verses were quotes from the Qur'an. Rather than just taking out those two lyrics, ALL the lyrics were taken out from the song. If you haven't heard it yet, check it out- it's a very good song.

There are a lot of better platformers out there, and it hurts me to say that about a game this cute and well-made. But I was having fun infrequently, and most levels were more irritating than they were challenging. Had the physics for even just jumping been improved, this would at least be a 4 star game. But again, if you like games that you can customize the bejesus out of, look no further than LittleBigPlanet.

Nothing else like it, 8 Mar 2010

Little Big Planet is taking user generated content to a whole new level. While appearing to be another platformer on the surface, its actually a game with endless potential due to the plethora of user created levels, made accessible with a stellar level design kit. Its fun, the sackboy characters are entertaining, the stock levels are amazing and some of the user created levels are incredibly unique and memorably.

    Story:

There is none. Well ok there is a story but its not really anything that's compelling or worth mentioning. Its simple and it gets you from level to level...loosely. But this is a platformer, do you really need much motivation to move from start to finish?

    Visuals/Audio:

I heart my PS3 and this game looks fabulous. Its cartoony so don't expect something MGS4 cut scenes but this truly is a beautiful game to behold. So colorful and vibrant as opposed to many "bleak" looking games. I wish the flame animations were better but oh well, can't have everything.

I don't think I've ever mentioned audio in a game review before, its worth mentioning here. The sound track in this game is fantastic. I had so much fun with the music in this game. Its unique, fits the level designs perfectly, and absolutely enhanced the gameplay.

    Gameplay:

Tons of levels to keep you busy and the difficulty does increase nicely. There are plenty of trophies to be found, minilevels to take on, as well as the user generated content. To find good user generated levels (because 95% of them are crap) search online for blog posts about the top levels, lest you waste time trying to use the user levels awful browsing.

I have to say the most frustrating thing about platformers is when you can't make a jump - particularly one that looks like you should make it. LBP falls victim to this fate. It uses "floaty" mechanics for controlling/jumping so the controls are NOT tight like a Mario game. To make matters worse there is the dreaded 2.5D bs. It will cause you frustration. You will fail jumps and die because the game could not put you on the correct plain. You have to just trust the game to manage the plains for you, which is an adjustment.

This is a game that should be played with friends on the same tv. I played online a number of times and have had mixed results. The game becomes increasingly fun when playing with fellow sackboys/sackgirls as opposed to single player. Be warned, when the levels get difficult, less experienced players will only slow you down and eat up lives. I enjoyed this difficultly but had to finish the game solo.

I'd like to see more from the user community or Media Molecule in terms of more levels. The MGS DLC was fantastic and completely added something new to the game, definitely worth the $5 extra.

If you like platformers, playing with friends, and want to see what others can create or try your own hand at level design then this is undoubtedly the game for you.

    Endless fun, 3 Mar 2010

Littlebigplanet is the type of game you'll never tire of. The graphics/visuals are incredible, the main character (sackboy) is adorable and can be customized to suit anyones tastes..the biggest draw however are the evels..in addition to the main story, players can go online and play different user created levels, so there are literally an infinite number of levels to play through..you'll find faithful recreations of levels from super Mario brothers, to totally original and captivating levels. If you manage to get bored of this game, it'll be a true accomplishment!

The best family game I have ever owned!, 26 Feb 2010

This game is a must have if your looking for that perfect fun game to play with your kids. It's easy to pick up and play and have a great time every time you play it. There is so much to do and collect in Little Big Planet that you will never get bored of it and when you do need a break from playing scavenger hunt you can make your own creative levels and share them with people. There is just so much replayability with collecting items to downloading other peoples creations that you will be hooked!

What makes this a special game for me is how my 6 year old can play and have a great time and I can jump right in and there is always something to challenge me. Imagine working together with your kids to get that hard to get item or learning how physics work while you build your own challenges or fun zones. There are really no other games like this on the PS3.

Highly recommended if your looking for something to play with your family. Great story, music and graphical art style! We love it!

Changing how you think of platformers, 30 Jan 2010

I've always been a platformer fan, myself, but the truth is that platformers, in the traditional sense, have been going out of style since 3D became the big thing.

This game, however, brings it back with a vengeance, and makes for an endless amount of fun.

The level designs are gorgeous and engaging, and you can literally make levels as in depth as the company-made ones. That's saying something. Go online, and there are hundreds of different levels, new levels, to play.

What I really like about this game, though, is the multiplayer aspect. It's a game that's ridiculously easy to teach and to learn, and it begs for two-player action. I like playing this game more with friends than I do alone. Even when I'm alone, I can play with people online.

Some parts of the game require 2, 3, and even four players to get through. Don't let that turn you off; you can hook up with players online at any time, and there's always someone on.

What I'm saying is, we have a platformer that ENCOURAGES multiplayer action. And it works out well!

Bottom line, this is the most fun I've had playing a video game in a long while.

Imagination Runs Wild!, 30 Jan 2010

Right from the intro screen, this game draws you in. The whole experience is highly creative, and though it can be short, sharing levels and designs (and searching for every item and bonus level) adds lots of replay value.

    A few notes:

    - Like any platformer (including the Mario series, which obviously inspired a lot in this game), LBP can be somewhat uneven. Most of the game goes by fairly briskly, but several levels has areas that can be very frustrating. It's not so much that the sections are difficult; it's more that the controls can be imprecise and sometimes gameplay aspects aren't always clear. For instance, one of the levels has you jumping on rotating barrels over a lava pit. I tried that same area probably 20 times (you get four "lives" per checkpoint) before realizing I could grab onto the barrels, making it much easier to navigate between them. And while the last few levels are supposed to be challenging, there are some parts that have to be replayed dozens of times before you finally get through them (plus if you lose the four lives, you have to replay the ENTIRE level just to get back to that point, which really annoyed me).

    - While the 3D aspect of the game (where you can jump between the foreground and background) is generally well done, at times it isn't clear whether some things in the background are "solid" or just there for decoration, and sometimes you'll get killed when the game doesn't register that you want to jump down rather than just stand at the edge of a platform. Super Mario Galaxy was more precise in this aspect, even considering the awkward controller.

    - The first few levels feature a narrator who helps you along the way and points out new powers and such, but he disappears for the rest of the game.

    - Every level is filled with decorations and materials that you can use in the level creator, which extends the gameplay considerably. There are also keys in several levels that lead to bonus stages - these can be fun, but I'd prefer another regular level or two (maybe another ninja level, as those were great!).

    - There are places where playing with another person (or more) can net you even more bonuses.

    - You can also find clothing and such to create multiple puppet designs. Mine included a zombie, homeboy and fairy girl (tee hee!).

    - The music fits every level. The settings are diverse, including versions Mexico, Japan, New York and India, and you might find yourself stopping just to hear the unique songs.

If you play alone and aren't into level creation or collecting items in a game, going through it will take around 10-15 hours. Despite the problems and frustrations, you'll still enjoy the game for its quirkiness.

    I'm now a believer, 5 Jan 2010

I recently acquired a PS3 mainly for the upcoming release of the game "Heavy Rain, though in the meantime I decided to check out the other main attractions for the system. Valkyria Chronicles and Metal Gear Solid 4 are the first games that I played and they were nothing more than movies with some interactive parts and I starting to suspect that the entire system was filled with nothing but interactive movies. My fears were suddenly nullified after playing LittleBigPlanet. Honestly, this game looked like a lot of unsubstantiated hype but it's the most fun that I've had with the new generation of console gaming (and I played a lot of the X-Box 360 games). The game is challenging without being annoying, and when you become frustrated with the main game the online community levels help to alleviate any stress. There is also an infinite amount of replay value contained in this game. Don't like any of the levels? Create your own! Seriously, the level creator is incredibly deep, intuitive, and accessible to any gamer. Not to mention, people have created in games in pretty much any genre as well. So...play it now!

Buy GOTY Edition, 12 Dec 2009

Great game, i enjoyed the story mode, good for at home multiplayer. Never messed w/ creating levels much, some of the online levels are pretty amazing, i will be picking this up and playing it for platforming-goodness for quite some time, i would suggest buying hte newer game of the year edition, it comes with an expansion, which i would have to buy seperately because i didn't know there was a goty edition. Basically this is one of those games that is supposed to be in everyones ps3 collection.

Tons of fun., 2 Dec 2009

This is a great game. The one downside I had was they sent me a European copy of the game. So I had to create a European profile to download any add-on's that kinda sucks. It took me a while to figure out that was my problem. But its a great game to invite your friends in and have a good laugh and online play is unlimited with possiblitys and you can create your own crazy worlds.

Great game for creative kids who like to build!, 28 Nov 2009

There are plenty of reviews of the "game play" part of the game, so what I wanted to make sure people understand is the importance of the level creation part. If your kid loves to build things, make contraptions or is already hooked on Legos and Crazy Machines, then this is a great game for them to expand on that theme. We have Crazy Machines, a PC game where you can build and fix all kinds of contraptions, and this is a great next step for him. You can make your own games with cars, elavators... set up your own puzzles and races. It's also a good beginning lesson in physics! I don't think my son has played the actual "game" since the first week, but he LOVES the level creator.

So, if you are hesitant to let your 7+ age kid play games, at least let them play with the level creator in this game. It is a great creative learning tool.

I want to tell my friends about this game because the entire time I was playing it I was giggling like a little school girl. I am a hardcore gamer and I personnally prefer shoot em ups like COD4 or the new MW2 coming soon. However I wanted a game that my wife would like to play as well and create a bond for my pasttime. This game fits that bill really well, it's cute and really interesting. I have to recommend this to all those guys out there that want their girlfriend or wife to play games with them. Or even just the casual gamer. Have fun!
