For us, flight sim fans, an audience much neglected the last 10 years, this game is a must, although HAWX has nothing to do with reality and simulation.

I loved playing this game, only problem is that you need a flight joystick because the ps3 controller is the worst thing you could use to play this. I brought the PS3/PC T.fighter stickX and oh my goodness. you will have lots of fun if you like shooting down stuff.

i was excited when i found out there was going to be a jet fighter game out for PS3...considering Ace Combat went retarded and switched only to XBox, shaking my head in disgust as i say that. Ace Combat was and still, as will always be far better and more of an enjoyable experience to play than this mediocre game. Yeah yeah, the graphics and detail...not enough to be on the same playing field of ace combat series. i'm loyal to the series, and this just doesn't measure up to it.

I really enjoyed this game. ti is the flight game I have for the PS3. it is similar enough to what I had for the PS2 with the Ace Combat games. The only complaint is that it is short. there should be more missions for the price of the game. when I go back through it again after learning the controls, I can complete all the missions in a day. Different missions bring on different challenges, so there is a variety of flying skills to master, and then it is over. dang I want More!

keep it short,
really fun game to play and it is a good game
however, 7gb of you hardrive, it's not worth it

It was a good fun game but very short and not that many people online.

I thought this game was good the game play is fantastic, and i would give this to a m8 to borrow. Very gd well done Tom.C.

I am into flight games. I find this game overly simple and arcade-like compared some of the examples on PC and XBOX360. But I still had lots of fun playing it. It is very easy to finish in the hardest setting and the game feels very rewarding as you play it. If you are into flight games it should take you no more than a day or two to beat the game.
There are limited but good online play options for this game such as 4 player coop and team deadmatch. These are a lot fun once you can connect to the game servers, which seem to shut down quite often. Also I don't understand why the online play is limited with 8 player only. These games are no more complicated than the first person shooters such as Killzone 2, where online play allows up to 32 players. It should be very easy to fix these problems, but I guess Ubisoft is not too interested in solving them anytime soon.
I recommend it if you like the genre of flight games

I'm on the Ace Combat fans group waiting for a PS3 version. H.A.W.X. falls behind, flying is far from realistic and the large centre joystick's dead zone makes it worse. Thrust control is also poor and fake, you bank without turning a single degree, you can push as many negative G's as you can pull positive ones, you can't reduce do idle allegedly cause you are under flight envelope protection, which you can remove but stay automatically on 3rd person side view. I know it's not a Flight sim; neither Ace Combat is but you could easier feel like flying a jet then with H.A.W.X. where there are no take offs or landings (at least till 30 % of the game done). Then there are some other mistakes like the A7 Corsair going supersonic...! Anyway the graphics are good and visually the game is appealing and fun to play. It's like shooting from a AA gun :) Let's wait for something better than this.

Hawx for the PS3 was an experience that I can only say, you nee to try this for yourself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

decent fighter game. not mind blowing, but pretty good consindering there's not really much out there for flight sims.

All images, how we can take control of the plane, the playability, real scenarios, all those things make this game one of the best of his era.

A good flight game. It is much improved with the use of a good flightstick controller.
Source: [amazon.co.uk]
pros: this game is fun and worth the money. it also fills avoid in the gaming space. this is the only flying sim you need.
neutral: it's unrealistic, arcade edge of your seat entertainment. you will kill some time. no, it will not cure cancer.
con: using left joystick ps3 sixaxis dualshock 3 that came my ps3 slim was frustrating at first. however, after 3 missions, your "muscle memory" will have adjusted.

I can't really think of anything else to say about this game that hasn't already been said. It's a great game and I recommend it.

hey im just gonna write a short review of this game, put it this way-i played the demo for this game around 30 times, i find it addictive, and today i just tried the online play and its excellent-so competative i love it-and i never liked flight games-or war games before-but this has to be one of the best games iv played let alone war or flight games

It isn't a flight simulator, but I would say it is definitely a game worth having.

I was excited to get this game because I had a log time without play a Jet's game since Ace Combat. I think that this game provides a good simulation and it is very funny.

I'm a flight simulation buff. I like this game a lot because you can set how realistic/unrealistic you want to play. Even in realistic mode it is not a simulator, but it's good enough to have a lot of fun. I have been playing it for a couple of months, finished the campaign and have been doing a lot of online flying against others. This feature is awesome and what any flying game should have. HOWEVER, the game crashes at least once per session, and the PS3 requires a hard reset. This has not happened in campaign mode, but only online. I have broadband internet and no other game has crashed before. You're in the middle of a gun battle and all of a sudden the screen freezes and the sound gets stuck in an endless loop. Very disappointing!

Tom Clancy's HAWX has some pretty impressive graphics and is fun to play. There are over 50 different aircraft to fly but most of them must me unlocked through career mode. There are also loads of different weapons to unlock and use including rockets, bombs, jamming devices, flares and more. Every plane has several load outs of weapons that you can install. There are two different modes to fly in. The first mode is called assistance mode and is typical of most dog fighting games where the camera is directly in back of the plane. The second mode is where you turn off the assistance mode and you have complete control of the plane. In this mode the camera is further back from the plane and diagonal. It's much more fun to play in this view but it makes it a lot more challenging.
Over 50 aircraft available and here are a few of them.
F-16 Fighting Falcon
F-22 Raptor
Eurofighter Typhoon
AV-8B Harrier II Plus
Rafale
F-14A Tomcat
F-15 Strike Eagle
F-117 Nighthawk
Jaguar
The only bad thing that I can say about this game is that it's fairly easy to complete even on hard level and I wish it had been more challenging.

I feel the game was good . there was a lot of detail to the planes. I felt more could have been done to the way the planes were flown as every plane in real life did not fly the same. also the take off's and landings should have been there.

Once you start this game its difficult to switch off, you just want to carry on with more missions. Graphics are very good and look real. Its a lot of fun.

Such a poor game. So boring and repetitive right from the start. There's no skill involved whats so ever, its too easy

The Tom Clancy series of games seems absolutely endless as they take on many forms from third person action shooters, stealth action, RTS and now the series has taken to the skies with H.A.W.X. This air combat title sees you take a different perspective during the Ghost Recon and End War time period as you are the air cover for the Ghost Recon team and also provide your air skills to defending American soil from a full blown military strike. The plot is quite silly and doesn't really make much sense when you look more into it, but that lack of plot is forgiven thanks to some brilliant game play especially when in the mode Assistance OFF, which allows you to go a bit crazy with your flying skills.
The plot first starts off in the year 2014; you are a skilled former U.S. Air Force Pilot by the name of David Crenshaw who is now a part of an elite unit called H.A.W.X. (High Altitude Warfare eXperimental squadron) which provides fire support for the Ghost team on the ground in Mexico. Shortly after your first mission in Mexico the Air Force decides to put an end to the H.A.W.X. programme thus putting Crenshaw out of the job. His skills are immediately recognised, however, and he is recruited to the PMC Artemis who apply his skills to carrying out a number of missions protecting and attacking numerous bases and enemies. All goes a bit sour and Artemis and the U.S. government have a falling out over a conflict in Brazil (isn't that always the case?), which then leads to Artemis and its board members going a bit nuts and attacking the U.S. and you re-join the Air Force to defend your homeland.
The plot is really basic and actually doesn't make a whole lot of sense as you have to question why the writers of the plot thought a PMC would under any real circumstances pledge a full scale military assault on its fellow countrymen. As far as I could tell it wasn't run by an evil James Bond-like master villain. H.A.W.X. is set in the sky and that's really where you should stay if you don't want to spoil the graphical beauty of the land which you can enjoy when you are quite high up. When you get closer to mother Earth I found myself noticing and cringing at the lack of detail on the ground which was quite disappointing considering the generation of gaming we are in. I wasn't expecting to see little people waving out their windows at me, but I expected more substance to the landscape as I got closer.
The machines are detailed enough for you to look at them admiringly as you spin around and blow the hell out of the guy who's been following you and trying to get a missile lock. I mentioned the Assistance OFF mode and this is really when the game starts to shine and becomes the most fun. Instead of the usual cockpit or third person type view you may be familiar with from other games of the same genre, when turning Assistance OFF you take on the view of a kind of spectator as any devices within the machine that will ensure your safety whilst flying are switched off and you are given the freedom to spin, dive and flip your way through an army of enemies. This is usually the best way that I can find of losing the missiles when they have locked on and been fired at you without using your flares.
The multiplayer is fairly basic with an online co-op mode in which you can engage in the campaign missions through online and can also take part in death match and team death match games. It's a fun game with some excellent game play but is let down by a glaringly ridiculous plot that fails to capture even a single iota of my interest. Some of the missions are a bit tough but easy to get the hang of and overall the game is a worthy addition to any game collection.

This is kind of the air combat game I've always been waiting for. The arcade-like Ace Combat series for Playstation was great but had no licensed planes and no real cities or locations. Microsofts Flight Simulator has licensed planes and real locations but can be quite boring and simulator-like (no explosions or damage on buildings). This is sort of a mix of those two and the result is great. Awesome air-to-air/ground combat over cities like L.A., Chicago and Tokyo with real fighter jets such as F-16, F-22(!), F-117, AV-8B Harrier, MiG and many more. It looks great and plays great. Highly recommended.*****

I saw some of the reviews before buying this game and quite a few were negative. I ignored these and still bought it. When it arrived the first few minutes of gameplay told me what type of game it was going to be.... an amazingly created, high graphics action flight game. No it is not a flight simulator, don't get confused, it can be dissapointing if you order it and find you cannot take off or land etc.
Over all a great game, highly recommended! *****

I've been a fan of flight-sims and flight-action games ever since playing Flight Simulator '95 on my parents old PC. I also grew up playing Ace Combat on the Playstation and have followed that series avidly for a number of years. So when Ubisoft announced Tom Clancy's HAWX I was immediately interested in the title. I've now managed to complete the game and have logged quite a few hours online as well.
So I'll begin with what's to like about the game. First, the selection of aircraft in the game is second-to-none! HAWX features everything from standard F-15, F-16, F-14, F-22, Su-25, Su-27, MiG-29, etc, aircraft that are readily found in most flight games to more exotic planes like the YF-12/SR-71, F-35 Lightning II, X-29, F-15 ACTIVE, F-18 HARV and a number of other fantastic aircraft. If you're a fan of fighters/multi-role jet aircraft this game will amaze you!
Unlike Ace Combat, HAWX also features real-world locations like Rio de Janeiro, Chicago, Tokyo and Los Angeles and a number of other locations. HAWX incorporates real satellite imagery from GeoEye into the game and famous landmarks will be instantly recognizable.
The game features 3 difficulty levels which directly impact the players load-out in each plane as well as damage characteristics. On 'normal' you'll find your plane capable of sustaining major damage and multiple missile strikes while carrying literally hundreds of missiles and bombs. It's not realistic though it's not meant to be. On 'elite' difficulty the game ramps the difficulty by cutting the amount of weapons you can carry (although still unrealistically high) and making damage realistic - one missile will down your plane.
HAWX also features an in-depth leveling system. Successfully destroying air and ground targets will net the player 'XP' which is tallied at the end of each level. The levels mirror real-life Air Force ranks (though some extra levels are thrown in) from a basic Airman all the way to General of the Air Force. All told there are 40 levels which equate to about 1.4 million 'XP'. Figuring that most missions will net a few thousand 'XP' the replay value is relatively high due to the requirements for reaching the highest ranks/levels. Also, upon leveling up the game rewards the players with new planes, paint schemes and weapons loads.
There are a few areas where I feel HAWX could be better. For one thing the game features 2 modes for flying your plane - "Assistance ON" & "Assistance OFF". Assistance OFF essentially makes your aircraft incredibly maneuverable - so much so that you'll be able to perform impossible turns and Mach 2+ easily weaving and dodging missiles. The unfortunate part of "OFF" mode is that the game locks your camera into a distant and awkward viewpoint. Your aircraft will be the size of a dime and targeting accurately is nightmarish due to the awkward controls. Due to the camera you'll be forced to blind fire missiles at enemies that you can't readily see - only trusting that you have a lock-on because of the audio chimes. Ultimately I found "OFF" mode more of a hassle than it was worth and stuck to a more traditional cockpit camera that is both functional (display information) and intuitive in relation to the control scheme. Using "ON" mode limits your aircraft to more familiar laws of physics though you'll at least be able to choose which camera suits your flying style best.
Also, though the graphics are good I feel that they're somewhat lacking in key areas. We all know that the PS3 is capable of some truly amazing visuals and because HAWX is a multi-platform game it just doesn't shine. The aircraft are rendered well but small touches like air-brakes are missing. When using aircraft like the F-15 active with canards you'd expect to be able to see the canards move from the cockpit camera but they're mysteriously absent. The replay mode is decent but limited in it's camera options and is strangely mute of engine sounds.
All in all I think that fans of flight-action games and Ace Combat will probably find HAWX enjoyable. Hopefully Ubisoft sees fit to continue the series and improve upon this good first undertaking!

HAWX represents the first good air combat game for the PS3. The main strength of this game is the strong graphics, which match the best of what's currently available for the PS3, and compare very favourably with most others. The game is also user friendly; controls are simple to master and the various options and settings are straight forward. It is an easy game to dip in and out of, as each individual mission is relatively brief. Overall an excellent game, though after a while, the missions can tend to seem very similar and the game would therefore benefit from some extra inspiration and variety.

I reccomend it a lot.

A POTENTIALLY GOOD GAME THAT HAS BEEN SPOILT DUE TO THE PROGRAMMERS AT UBISOFT NOT KNOWING THE TRUE DEFINITION OF 'NORMAL' WHEN RELATING TO LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY!!!

This is a great game especially for all those who like flight simulators. Although I am just getting started with the game, I see that there are a lot of missions which have very different experiences. There are various levels of progress stages which unlock additional planes / supporting equipment. I strongly recommend this game.

It is good game with great maps, but I still love much more BFBC & Warhawk!

I found HAWX quite a short game, very well made, beautiful, beautiful graphics, random storyline (I tend to skip through game stories to get to the bad guy bashing anyway). The main problem with the single player mode was that it was very short, the game is pretty intuitive and you can complete it in around 5 hours of play time. That said though, the online multiplayer is awesome and totally makes the game worth buying. Dogfights are fast and exciting scrambles that really give you that adrenaline buzz that great games do. Tactical formations and a little bit of organisation with team mates gives big rewards over other less organised teams too. Different weapon and plane selection enables a variety of strategies. The usual XP earned for completing challenges and downing foes goes to earn you more planes and weapons, as well as increase your ranking amongst other online players. If you like online gaming and are into planes or flight sims, you won't be disappointed in buying HAWX.

very good graphics, but restricted game play, no take off or landings, only a few things to do, plus if you dont have the skills to get past 1st or 2nd stages, then the rest of the game cant be used, I will be selling mine on amazon soon.

So my title really sums it up for me.
I come from playing flight sims on the PC for 15 years. I appreciate a little arcade action (Blazing Angels II is big fun) but I like my realism.
The assistance ON mode in HAWKX feels odd. You can roll the plane in any way and it doesn't turn. The yaw control is necessary, but hard to use in combination with pitch, brake, throttle, targeting, and weapons.
So what's assistance OFF like? I can't tell what the flight dynamics are because the view makes it impossible to fly. I played the demo and hated the view in assistance OFF. I actually felt it was unplayable and still do now that the game has been released and gone through an update. In fact, the only reason I purchased the game was that the guy in the store assured me that the view had been fixed. Idiot.
You won't actually find this out until you are ~5 missions into the game and get to the Brasil mission where you are finally ALLOWED to turn assistance OFF.
Then the game froze the PS3. Never had that happen before.
So I called Ubisoft today. They say that they have NEVER had any complaints about the viewpoint, that I'm wrong because I can change the view when assistance is OFF, and that the game has NEVER frozen up a PS3.
I spoke to Chris and Tish at Ubisoft. They suggested that the cause was a dirty disc or a corrupted save file. Okay, I'll play along, even though a moron would know that these are design and programming issues.
I deleted all the remnants of the game (save files, game update) and played it again with the same result, except it didn't lock the console up again.
So how do I get my money back? Trina and Chris say to take it back to the retailer, even though the receipt clearly states that they don't take returns on games, and no one has for decades.
I'm really unhappy with these jerks. This is a piece of crap. Don't buy it.

i got this for my sons b-day and this is a totally better game than i expected. the graphics r awesome expect they get worse the lower u r.overall this game is totally awesome and incredable. i give it a 5 for 5

The game is very fun, but some aircraft details that are not correct in it. One is the YF-17 in the game is nothing but a F/A-18 with a YF-17 paint scheme. While a F-18 was designed off the YF-17 platform anyone in the know came easily destinguish between the two. I'm pretty sure the older f-18's(pre F-18E Super Hornets) didn't have three hardpoints for mounting weapons either. Also a F-15E isn't a single seat plane. There was a few other aircraft details I noticed to be incorrect, but I can't remember them off the top of my head. Most of the aircraft details are very good though.
Another thing is this game takes a long time to level up. I've been at it for a while and am only on level 28. I think there's 40 levels, and to get new aircraft, and weapons packages you have to level up.
Still I like the game and recommend buying it, especially if your into planes.

I had hoped that this would be a step toward a flight Sim for PS3 but unfortunately despite the game overview, you have very little control of the aircraft and its flight characteristics are laughable.

Pure arcade NOT simulation. Do not expect anything else. Flight sim fans steer well clear.
Source: [amazon.co.uk]
this game isnt bad at all, exactly what i imagined it to be, an arcade shooter featuring planes, in the tom clancy/ghost recon world.
its fine, honestly, very pretty, lovely terrain, great plane models/skins, realistic and pretty looking enough.
and it has a good story arc, the usual tom clancy type of story, and intertwines nicely with the rest of the sort of "series" ie adv warfighter, end war etc.
its not my most favourite game of the year so far, and not the most amazing, but it is fun and immersive.
i must laugh at people who have said that its simply not realistic and not a good flight sim at all and marked it down accordingly,
what did you expect? im sorry but if youre after realistic flight sim material, youre barking up the wrong tree, and not even in the right park!
it may have a pc release, but believe me, its aimed squarely at consoles, you want realism and inch perfect flight models and avionics etc, get on your pc and get black shark/LOMAC/falcon 4. you want a fun tom clancy world plane game almost in the vein of a top gun/stealth/generic military buddy film, then get this, as thats exactly what it is, and its fun too.
EDIT: as at 31 may 09
i still am amazed at people being disappointed or shocked at this not being a sim???????? telling flight sim fans to steer clear?????????
what did you expect? its a console..... its a tom clancy game......... read between the lines.
but that doesnt mean it deserves low stars because of this, its an ok game, it really is. and yes, im a huge flight sim fan, i own and am good at lomac, falcon 4 and black shark among others. am i disappointed at this game? no, its a good game to play on the console, if youre a console owner and are after a "flight sim" buy a pc.
if you have this on a pc and are moaning its not a flight sim, my advice would be..... buy a flight sim.
why would you have a high end gaming system, capable of multithreading, multiple calculations superior horsepower to a console and the keys/peripherals to operate a sim correctly, only to play a console game on it?????

Having read the reviews on IGN was worried about the game.
However, the single player was very impressive along with the wide range of planes unlockable. The co-op also compliments the single player. However the online is very dissapointing with only one game mode (team deathmatch.)
Would like to see taking off and landing in the game, however i would still say this is my favourite game of the year so far and is the best and only fighter sim on the PS3.

H.A.W.X is a futuristic air combat game that allows you to pilot various planes to complete around 20 missions.
Story:
H.A.W.X has a great single player mode with an engaging story line. The game is set around 10 years in the future. You play the role of a US Air Force fighter pilot whose H.A.W.X squadron is disbanded shortly after the first mission in the game. You and your team mates leave the Air Force and join Artemis - a private military company (PMC) - travelling all over the world providing air support for any country and organisation willing to pay your employer for your services. Its not long before Artemis comes into conflict with the US government, which is where the story really picks up.
For those who have played Ghost Recon II, there is a nice nod to that game as some of the characters make cameo appearances in H.A.W.X. In fact, the first mission has you providing air support for one of the missions that appears in Ghost Recon II.
Planes:
There is a large number of planes available to choose in order to complete each mission, from classic fighter planes like F14, F15, Migs to more modern planes such as F117A, Euro Fighter, F22 Raptor and the upcoming Joint Strike Fighter. There are even real life prototype planes such as the F15 ACTIVE. Completing missions gives you valuable points which unlock other planes and/or weapons. You can even unlock different skins for some planes.
Each plane has its own attributes such as Speed, Armour and Handling. Additionally, every plane has a rating which corresponds to the planes effectiveness against Air to Air and Air to Ground targets. Once you choose the plane, you have the option to customise it with different types of weapons. Choosing the right plane and weapons go a long way to successfully completing each mission.
Gameplay:
H.A.W.X plays more like an arcade game than a traditional flight sim. This may come as a surprise to those familiar with other Tom Clancy games such as Splinter Cell or Ghost Recon, both of which place an emphesis on realism. But in honesty, the arcade experience works very well as the action is breathtakingly fast which only adds to the games appeal.
In true arcade style, you are given an unrealistically large weapons arsenal. There are three levels of difficulty to choose from (Normal/Hard/Elite), each of which determines the number of weapons you start off with. The harder the game, the less weapons you get and the more damage you suffer from enemy hits. On Elite, one good hit from a SAM will blow you out of the sky, whereas on Normal, your plane can take lots of punishment.
One novel feature introduced in H.A.W.X is the Enhanced Reality System (ERS). With ERS set to ON, a series of triangular shaped gates are projected in front of your plane. Flying through these gates will assit in getting a lock on an enemy target. For mobile targets such as planes and helicopters, ERS will display the flight path required to lock on. For targets that are hidden behind buildings/mountains etc, ERS will display the optimal flight path to score a successfull hit. ERS can also be used to evade enemy missiles. If a missile is heading your way, activate ERS and the flight path to dodge the missile will be displayed.
H.A.W.X provides a number of views to choose from. You can select a view from the back of the plane, or cockpit view or a HUD style view. There is even a missile view - very reminiscent of Airwolf.
There is also an 'Assistance Off' mode where you get a sort of long distance 3rd person perspective view of your plane and the surroundings. In this mode, your plane can perform maneuvers which normally your plane could not do. The disadvantage of this mode is that it is easy to stall the plane. This mode is tricky to get used to but it does allow you to evade missiles and lock onto enemy planes easier if playing in Elite mode. Its easy to turn this mode on or off so you don't have to use it if you don't want to. It doesn's take anything away from the game if you always play with Assistance On.
Missions:
The single player campaign is highly diverse. Missions involve dogfighting, providing close air support, bombing enemy camps, there is even a mission where you have to protect Air Force 1. Its clear that a lot of thought has gone into designing each level and your are not just forced to only destroying the enemy in every level - which would become very repetitive. Once a mission has been completed, you can play it again to improve your score and gain more experience points.
Multiplayer:
H.A.W.X has good support for online multiplayer mode where you can go up against a number of human opponents. Multiplayer mode also allows you to pick up points to increase you rank.
Summary:
The game has an intersting one player story mode which will have you hooked for many hours. There are a huge number of planes and weapons to unlock and there are also challenges in the game to complete for added points and replay value. ERS is an interesting addition and Assistance ON/OFF mode adds to the depth of the game by introducing the threat of stalling the plane. Overall, this is a great purchase and a fine addition to the PS3 library.

If you're expecting to fly a plane with a 1st-person view (ie sitting in cockpit) you're out of luck. All the dogfighting forces you to use 'advanced mode' and that's 3rd-person only. There's no way to switch views, and the controls go all stupid too.
I STRONGLY recommend against buying.

Me and a friend have been playing this game a lot recently, and we both can't get enough. Even though this game is one player and we both swap controllers between levels, its fun enough that you enjoy watching the other guy play the game.
On my top 5 list of games to play and own.

I hate to be a debbie downer, but I was really unsatisfied with this game. Its the same ole thing, mission after mission - the only thing that changes is the landscape.
If I were smart enough to be a game developer, I would have a flight game that includes take off and landings, take off and landing from an air craft carrier; take off and landing with a harrier jumpjet; airstrikes that get called in from ground personnel; joint strikes with helicopter gunships. I mean, the list goes on and on, and this game fell short on just about every level.
The only thing this game gets good marks for are the graphics and dogfights. But really, how many dogfights can you do before you're wicked bored.
